What I do

Much of the furniture crafted in the middle 17th century, the Jacobean period, was produced generally by local 'joyners' using local materials. Oak was the main timber, and carving a much used decoration. The fact that many pieces can be accurately dated and traced to original owners stems from the practice of carving initials and the dating of individual products. Oak will last many hundereds of years and the craftsmanship of these 'joyners' has ensured that many wonderful examples survive to this day.

Unfortunately many items of period furniture can only be admired in museums and historic houses. My aim, therefore, is to recreate desirable furniture of this period for customers to use and enjoy in their own homes for many years.

I fashion and assemble solid oak furniture entirely by hand, employing 17th century designs and traditional techniques throughout.

Quality Assurance...

My own involvement at all production stages, from the felled tree to the finished article, guarantees outstanding quality control.

...at every stage of production

  • The construction of each piece uses mortice and tenon joints which are secured with oak pegs.
  • Dovetails used in the drawers are all hand cut.
  • Door, side and rear panels are held in grooves to allow for any movement of the wood.
  • All carving is done by hand.
  • Hinges and metal fittings are in the original style, worked by hand at my forge giving a unique colour and surface finish.
  • The furniture is hand finished in the traditional way using linseed oil and beeswax.
  • Finally if customers so wish, I can skillfully and authentically 'age' any product.

I also undertake restoration work to individual pieces - Tudor and Jacobean Oak furniture is my speciality.

More Information

I have collected a selection of photographs and notes about some examples of my furniture on the furniture page. I also do sculptures to commission - see my sculpture page.

For more information on the techniques I use, including collecting and storing timber and making a cast of a carving, see my techniques pages.
